My name is Ron Housch and I’ve been taking pictures for more than fifty years. Becoming a photographer took much longer.
When I bought my first 35mm camera in 1972, I was certain I would become a professional photographer. Life had other plans. My career took me in a different direction, but photography never stopped being part of who I am.
After almost 37 years with the Air Force, I retired in 2014. Retirement gave me the opportunity to devote more time to a passion that had been part of my life for decades.
Today, my wife, Melinda, and I travel at a much slower pace, often exploring America’s National and State Parks. Although our journeys have expanded far beyond the back roads that inspired the name Back Road Gallery, we still enjoy wandering those quieter roads whenever we can. They’ve led us to wildlife, historic places, and beautiful landscapes that many travelers simply drive past.
While I enjoy photographing a wide variety of subjects, wildlife has always held a special place in my heart—especially the American Bald Eagle. There’s something unforgettable about watching one soar overhead or capturing the split second when it locks onto its prey. Those are the moments that keep me coming back.
As time has passed, I’ve realized that my reasons for making photographs have changed very little. Over thirty years ago I wrote an artist’s statement for an exhibition, and it still captures exactly how I feel today.
